MMOBin: The Wrong Name?

Author: David Peralty Category: Asides

An old and dear friend of mine just let me know that I shouldn’t have put “MMO” in my domain due to the number of MMO blogs already out there. Have I made a grave mistake in the selection of my domain? I chose it because I wanted to talk about multiple online games but wanted something descriptive. Thoughts and ideas anyone?

Hey now, I didn’t say you shouldn’t have put “MMO” in the title - I said that there are a LOT of “MMO” sites already out there (my own included) and that I personally disliked how every single game site seems to have it in there these days - There’s MMONation, MMOArt, MMOInfo, MMOGamers, MMORPG and so many others, the list is pretty endless.

It’s a personal opinion, and no more important then that since everyone has one (an opinion, that is!)

Plus, lets face it I’ve asked you for advice about my site and my work before, and I felt a personal little tug from a friends perspective!

MMO is quite over done as far as a domain titles go, originality needs to be a key in naming, sure its an easy cop out, but when there are 9,000 MMO sites vs your one MyOnlineGamingUniverse.com or even shortened to MOGU.com. /shrug thats my short sweet opinion.

Yeah, there are a lot of mmo.com sites out there already using similar domain names. Even a quick google search turns up tons. mmorpg, mmohub, mmo-champion, mmolist, mmoquests, mmo-gamer, mmohut, mmocrunch, mmoguildsites, mmoportal, etc. The list is pretty damn big. I would choose something else personally.

Yeah, I get that there are too many. I just couldn’t think of anything better. I was going to use evearchive, but I really want to talk about the Star Trek Online MMO that’s in progress. :)

An original name is important, but the content of the site is the true measure of its success. Look at names of other sites with silly or irrelevant names — sure they sound cool now, but what was your first thought when you heard — Twitter, Facebook, Virginworlds, Hulu, etc…

Keep the name and charge boldly into content that people will want to read.
